San Francisco Movers Who Plan for Hills, Stairs and Elevators

Spartan Moving Systems is based in San Jose, about 42 miles southeast of San Francisco, and our crews drive up US-101 or I-280 for every city job. You do not pay for that trip; billing starts at your door. San Francisco morning moves have a 9 to 11 AM arrival window, and the crew lead phones about 30 minutes before the truck arrives. When a move runs between two addresses more than 10 minutes apart, California rules require that drive to be billed at double time.

Victorian and Edwardian flats

Found in the Castro, the Mission, Noe Valley, Hayes Valley and much of the western and northern neighborhoods. Long front stairs, narrow halls and interior stairs to upper units. Large furniture comes apart and goes back together at no extra charge on a full-service move.

Hillside houses and cottages

Bernal Heights, Glen Park, Potrero Hill and the slopes below Twin Peaks. Steep grades and stairway streets mean the truck parks where it is safe and the crew carries from there.

Towers and condo buildings

SoMa, Mission Bay, Rincon Hill and downtown. Elevator reservations, loading docks and a certificate of insurance, which we provide free.

Detached family homes

The Sunset, the Richmond and the residence parks on the west side, with garages at street level and more furniture per home.

Parking is the single biggest variable in a city move. The SFMTA authorizes temporary no-parking signs that reserve curb for a moving truck. The SFMTA guidance we publish is that requests go in at least 5 business days ahead, and signs go up at least 72 hours before the move in unmetered areas or 24 hours before at meters. Without a reserved curb, a truck may end up double-parked. If a citation results, it is added to the bill, as our quote and policy state, so planning the curb ahead is worth it.

• 2 movers, $145/hr: very small moves, or on request.
• 3 movers, $175/hr: the standard crew for most studios, flats and two-bedrooms.
• 4 movers, $235/hr: three bedrooms over 1,800 square feet, or four bedrooms and up.

There is a 3-hour minimum, then billing in 15-minute increments. Blankets, tape, floor protection, loaned wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly are included; packing materials are charged as used. San Francisco: typical hours and totals by home size

For anyone comparing movers in San Francisco, we looked at the final invoices on our own recent local moves and sorted them by bedrooms, then applied the standard crew rate for each size. Some moves finish faster and some run longer; local moves are billed by the hour, never as a flat price.

A flat with a reserved curb in front sits low in its row; a long carry from the nearest safe spot on a steep block pushes it higher.

1. We set up an on-site estimate. We do not quote from video.
2. We look at stairs, the elevator, and where the truck can stop at both ends.
3. You arrange curb space and building paperwork; we send any COI the building needs, using the HOA or management name, mailing address and email.
4. On move day the crew arrives in the 9 to 11 AM window, protects floors and wraps furniture.
5. Everything we took apart is reassembled at the new home.
