Castro Movers: Planning Around Tall Stoops and Steep Blocks

Castro movers for Victorian flats with tall front stairs, Eureka Valley houses and steep side streets in 94114. 3 movers $175/hr. Call 1-877-417-6060.

Can you get a large sectional up a Castro front stair?

Usually, once it is separated into pieces. We measure the stair and entry first. If it truly will not fit, we tell you before anything is carried.

I am moving from an upper flat. Does the floor matter?

Yes, because each flight adds carrying time. Let us know the floor and whether there is a usable back stair so the crew size and time estimate are right.

Do you handle pianos in Victorian flats?

Yes. A grand piano always gets 4 movers. An upright gets 4 movers when there is a flight of stairs, which is almost always the case here.

Can my building get a certificate of insurance?

Yes, at no charge. Send us the HOA or management company name, its mailing address and an email address.

Do weekend moves cost more?

No. The hourly rate is the same every day of the week.

Are there discounts?

Returning customers get 7%, friend referrals 5%, and real-estate-agent referrals 7%. Referral discounts need the referrer's name or phone number as proof.

The houses set the pace here

Walk any residential block of the Castro and you see the same thing: rows of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, many split into two or three flats, with a long straight stair climbing from the sidewalk to the front door. Those stairs decide how a move goes. A sofa that slides easily out of a suburban living room has to be tipped, carried up or down twenty-odd steps, and turned through a narrow entry hall with a banister in the way.

Our crews take legs off tables, separate sectionals and break down bed frames before anything hits the stair, then rebuild it all at the new place. That disassembly and reassembly is part of a full-service move, along with moving blankets on every piece and floor protection through the hallways. Top-floor flats often have an inside stair as well, so tell us which floor you are on and whether the back stairs are usable.

Where the Castro begins and ends

The heart of the neighborhood is the corner of Castro and Market, where the rainbow crosswalks, the Castro Theatre marquee and the Muni Metro station sit within a block of each other. 18th Street is the other main commercial strip. The residential area, historically called Eureka Valley, spreads south and west toward the hills of Corona Heights and Twin Peaks, while Dolores Park and the Mission lie to the east. Noe Valley is just over the ridge to the south.

Curbs, hills and the Market Street corridor

  • Commercial blocks: Castro, 18th and Market carry buses, streetcars, delivery vans and heavy foot traffic. Loading right on those blocks is slow, so a side-street approach is often better.
  • West of Castro Street: blocks rise quickly toward Corona Heights and Twin Peaks. On the steepest grades we stage the truck where it can sit safely and plan the carry from there.
  • Garage doors: many homes have a garage under the front stair. Tell us if the driveway in front of it is yours, since it can change where the truck stands.
  • Reserving curb: the SFMTA authorizes temporary no-parking signs for moving trucks. The SF parking permit guide walks through the process.

Our San Francisco numbers

We had no recent quote requests tagged to the 94114 ZIP, so here are the citywide figures instead. Between mid-July and late October 2026 we received 43 quote requests from San Francisco, not counting account work, 40 of them local moves, and 28 booked or completed. One-bedroom homes led the list, ahead of two-bedrooms and studios.

Getting a Castro flat ready

  1. Count the steps from the sidewalk to your door, plus any interior stair to an upper flat.
  2. Find out if your landlord or HOA wants a certificate of insurance. We issue it free; we need the management or HOA name, mailing address and email.
  3. Ask neighbors in your building about move timing so a shared entry is clear.
  4. Decide on a curb reservation if your block is full most mornings.
  5. Book an on-site estimate. We do not do video estimates, and seeing the stairs matters.
  6. Set aside a first-night bag and keep it out of the truck.

Hourly rates for a Castro move

The standard crew is 3 movers at $175 an hour. A small studio with a light load can work with 2 movers at $145. For a larger home, a three-bedroom over 1,800 square feet or four bedrooms and up, we send 4 movers at $235. The rate does not change on weekends. The first 3 hours are the minimum, then time runs in 15-minute steps. Stairs add time, which is why we ask about them up front. Packing materials are charged as used; blankets, tape and wardrobe boxes are included. More detail is on the moving cost page.

Hours and cost by home size in Castro

For a realistic sense of the total, we counted the time on every recent local job for a direct customer where the home size was recorded and kept the middle half of each group for the table. These are typical ranges, not quotes; your bill is hourly and depends on the time the crew spends.

From our closed local jobs for direct customers, July to October 2026: the middle half of billed hours by home size, including the drive between your two addresses and excluding account, partner-billed and full-packing jobs. Supplies are charged as used, with a 3-hour minimum.

Carrying a sofa up or down twenty-odd steps and through a narrow entry hall is the work here, so many Castro flats land toward the upper end of their row.

Distance, arrival and drive time

The Castro is about 42 miles northwest of downtown San Jose, and there is no charge for our drive to you. Crews arrive in the 9 to 11 AM window for San Francisco morning starts, with a call about 30 minutes out. When the pickup and drop-off are more than 10 minutes apart, the drive between them is billed at double time under California rules.
