Semi-rural, between two ridges

Alamo is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, set in the San Ramon Valley between Las Trampas Ridge to the west and the Mount Diablo foothills to the east. Danville Boulevard is the old main road through town, I-680 runs alongside it, and Stone Valley Road and Livorna Road climb east into the oak hills. The Iron Horse Trail follows the old rail line through the valley. Homes sit on large lots, many with long private drives, horse property here and there, and gardens that have had decades to grow in.

Roads run by the county, not a city

Because Alamo has no city government, public roads are Contra Costa County's, and police services come from the county Sheriff's office. Many side streets are narrow lanes and cul-de-sacs without sidewalks, some ending at gated drives. Here is what that changes on move day:

  • A truck parked on a lane can block neighbors, so we plan where to stand before the day and keep the stop short.
  • Long gravel or paved drives may not suit a loaded truck. Where the drive is too long, steep or tight, we park at the road and carry.
  • Gated estates: give us the gate code or the person who opens it.
  • Old oaks over the drive can be too low for a box truck. Tell us about them.

Up I-680 from San Jose

Alamo is about 36 miles north of downtown San Jose, straight up I-680 past Pleasanton, San Ramon and Danville. That drive is free to you; we do not charge for travel to your location. East Bay morning crews arrive between 9 and 11 AM and call 30 minutes before they reach the gate or driveway.

Custom homes and what fills them

Alamo homes range from mid-century ranch houses on an acre to newer custom houses around Round Hill Country Club and in the Stone Valley Oaks area. These moves tend to involve heavy, valuable pieces: antiques, art, grand pianos, marble-top tables, outdoor furniture, wine collections and workshop gear in the garage or barn. We pad each piece and take apart beds, tables and large furniture, then reassemble at the new address, all part of a full-service move. Grand pianos always go with four movers.

A short Alamo checklist

  • Walk the property and list what is outside the house: patio sets, planters, sheds, barn or workshop contents.
  • Measure the drive length and note the narrowest point and any low branches.
  • If a gate is involved, confirm who will open it on move day.
  • Decide on packing. Materials are charged as used.

Pricing for Alamo properties

Most Alamo houses are large enough for our four-mover crew at $235 an hour, which is what we recommend for three-bedroom homes over 1,800 square feet and every home with four or more bedrooms. A smaller cottage or an in-law unit can be done with three movers at $175. The minimum is three hours, then billing runs by the quarter hour, the same on Sunday as on Monday. Payment is cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard, with 3% on cards and no checks.

Alamo: typical hours and totals by home size

The rows below come from the hours we actually billed on Bay Area moves we finished this summer and fall. Treat them as a typical spread. Billing stays hourly from the crew's arrival until the job is done.

Source: final invoices on our own local moves for direct customers, July to October 2026, middle half of each size group, not counting account or partner-billed jobs or jobs where we packed the whole home. Materials are billed as used; minimum 3 hours, then 15-minute increments.

Big lots are where Alamo moves add time: when a drive is too long, steep or tight we park at the road and carry, and that walk is on the clock.

Alamo in the numbers

Alamo is a small community. Between mid-July and late October 2026 we had one Alamo quote request, a move in from Orinda that completed. For the valley as a whole (Alamo, Danville, San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore) we received 9 quote requests in that period, not counting account work, and 6 booked or completed.

Neighbors up and down the valley

  • Danville: immediately south, with a walkable downtown and gated Blackhawk to the east.
  • Walnut Creek: just north, condos downtown and gated Rossmoor.
  • San Ramon: newer planned neighborhoods further south.
  • Moraga: over Las Trampas Ridge, split-levels near Saint Mary's.
  • Lafayette: hillside valleys along Highway 24.

Questions and answers

Do I need a county permit to park the truck on my lane?

If the truck can load from your driveway, it usually does not come up. If it has to stand on a county road for the day, check with Contra Costa County, and we will help you work out what applies.

Our driveway is several hundred feet long. Will the truck come up it?

If it is wide and firm enough and there is room to turn or back out, usually yes. If not, we park at the road and carry, and plan the crew size for it.

Will you move the grand piano and the art?

Yes. A grand piano always gets four movers. Art and mirrors are padded and handled individually; tell us about valuable pieces at quote time.

Is there a travel charge to Alamo?

No. We do not charge to come to you. If your two addresses are more than 10 minutes apart, the drive between them is billed at double time.

We are moving within the valley. Can you hold some furniture in storage?

Yes. Storage is a flat monthly rate, and it is never discounted.

Can you come look at the house before quoting?

Yes. We do on-site estimates, which is the right way to price a large Alamo property. We do not do video estimates.
