Mill Valley Movers for Canyon Roads and Redwood Lots

Mill Valley spreads up the eastern side of Mount Tamalpais, from the tidal flats of Richardson Bay into steep canyons shaded by second-growth redwoods. The downtown plaza around Throckmorton Avenue and the old depot sits at the bottom, with Miller Avenue and East Blithedale Avenue fanning out toward US-101. Blithedale Canyon, Cascade Drive and the streets above Old Mill Park climb fast from there. This is the town where the Dipsea race begins with its famous stairways, and plenty of houses have their own long flights of steps.

A Mill Valley mailing address can mean the city itself or one of the unincorporated communities that share the 94941 area: Almonte, Alto, Homestead Valley, Tamalpais Valley and Strawberry. Street rules there can differ from the city proper, so we check which agency covers your address before move day.

• Downtown. Metered street parking and little curb space. A truck spot has to be planned ahead.
• Canyon streets. Narrow, shaded roads beside creeks, sometimes one lane with turnouts.
• Strawberry and Tam Valley. More ranch homes, condos and apartments with easier access closer to 101 and Shoreline Highway.

Older shingled cottages, Craftsman bungalows, mid-century houses with walls of glass and large remodeled homes on hillside lots. Some hold pianos, original art and antiques, and the path from the road can include a steep driveway, an exterior stair and a deck. We pad and wrap every piece, cover railings and floors along the whole path, and take apart what will not make the turns.

A Strawberry condo or a small downtown cottage is usually 3 movers at $175 an hour. A canyon home with 4 or more bedrooms, or 3 bedrooms and more than 1,800 square feet, gets 4 movers at $235 an hour. Grand pianos always go with 4 movers. The first 3 hours are the minimum and time is then billed in 15-minute increments, with one rate whether you move on a Tuesday or a Sunday. Pads, tape, wardrobe boxes, floor protection and furniture disassembly come standard; packing materials are charged as used.

Because the hourly rate alone says little about the total, we pulled the hours from our own closed-out local moves rather than an online calculator and set them next to the crew rate for each size. Mill Valley is about 53 miles northwest of downtown San Jose in a straight line. The town sits just off US-101 north of the Golden Gate Bridge, with East Blithedale Avenue and Shoreline Highway leading in from the freeway. We do not bill for the drive to you. If the new home is more than 10 minutes from the old one, time driving between them is billed at double, as California law sets out. A move from a canyon road to Strawberry often stays under that, while a move to San Francisco usually does not.

• Find out whether your street is city or county, especially in Almonte, Alto, Homestead Valley, Tam Valley or Strawberry.
• For a downtown address, plan the truck spot early, because metered curb space is tight.
• Walk the carry route: driveway, steps, deck, door. Note the tightest turn.
• Flag pianos, sculptures and heirlooms at the on-site estimate.
• Trim back plants that crowd an exterior stair.
• The crew calls about 30 minutes before arriving.

• Larkspur: over the ridge, with Magnolia Avenue and Madrone Canyon.
• Corte Madera: just north on 101, flatter bayside neighborhoods and Christmas Tree Hill.
• Greenbrae: condos and split-levels at Sir Francis Drake.
• Kentfield: on the north side of Mount Tamalpais, with Kent Woodlands.
• Ross: large estates on wooded lanes.
