We charge hourly, and in Atherton the usual crew is four movers at $235 an hour, which is our rule for three-bedrooms over about 1,800 square feet and anything with four or more bedrooms. Smaller homes or partial moves can run with three at $175. The minimum is 3 hours, then 15-minute increments. A long driveway, stairs and the walk from a back cottage do not carry surcharges; they are part of the time. Blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes, floor protection and disassembly are included on a full-service move, and packing materials are charged as used.

A town of houses and trees
Atherton is almost entirely residential. There is no commercial downtown; the town center on Fair Oaks Lane holds the town offices, and Holbrook-Palmer Park is the shared green space. El Camino Real and Middlefield Road pass through, with Valparaiso Avenue and Watkins Avenue among the main cross streets, while Menlo College and Sacred Heart Schools take up campuses of their own. Most homes sit on lots of an acre or more, set back behind hedges, gates and big oaks.
The result is a different kind of move. The issue is rarely whether the truck can get close. It is how much is inside, how far it travels to the truck, and how carefully it needs to be handled on the way.
How far we come
Atherton is about 19 miles northwest of downtown San Jose. The town sits between US-101 and I-280, so the drive up from the South Bay is a straightforward one. Morning Peninsula jobs start in the 8-10 AM window, with the foreman's call about 30 minutes out. There is no charge for the drive from our base to your address.
Roads without sidewalks, drives without end
Many Atherton streets have no sidewalks and no curb, just pavement edged by gravel or planting. A truck can stand at the road edge, but it is usually better inside the property, on a driveway long enough to hold it. Gated entries need a code or someone to open them, and a circular drive may be easier to enter one way than the other.

Inside the house
West Atherton holds many of the largest properties. Lindenwood mixes Eichler-era homes with newer custom houses, and Menlo Oaks and the streets west of the Alameda have their own character. Across all of them the contents tend to include grand pianos, wine collections, framed art, stone and glass tables, and furniture that came from a decorator rather than a box. Guest houses, pool houses and detached garages add more rooms to empty.
For moves like these the crew is usually four, the floors get runners from the front door to every room we work in, and fragile pieces get packed on their own instead of riding in a load.
How often we move in Atherton
Atherton is a small town, and we see fewer moves here than in its larger neighbors. We had no Atherton quote requests between mid-July and late October 2026, so the cost table above draws on moves across the Bay Area rather than in town.
Things to arrange beforehand
- Gate codes, or a person at the gate, for both the old and the new address.
- A plan for the cars and any landscaping or contractor trucks so the drive is open.
- A list of the pieces that need special care: pianos, art, stone tops, safes.
- What goes to storage if the new home is not ready. Storage is a flat monthly price, never discounted.
- An on-site estimate. We walk the property; we do not estimate from video.
- If a TV is wall-mounted, we take it down and can connect it later, but we do not mount it.

Questions and answers
Can you move a grand piano?
Yes. A grand or baby grand always gets four movers. If the piano is the only item, the job has a 4-hour minimum.
Do you need the town's permission to park on the road?
If the truck fits on your property, usually not. If it has to stand in the public right of way, we check the town's current rules for your street before the move.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance for our new building or HOA?
Yes, at no charge. We need the HOA or management company name, its mailing address and an email address.
Can the crew pack the whole house?
Yes. We pack full homes or just the fragile rooms. Packing time is hourly and the materials are billed only for what we use.
