What a Los Altos move costs
A rebuilt home with four bedrooms, or three bedrooms over 1,800 square feet, needs 4 movers at $235 an hour. Original ranch homes of two or three bedrooms and downtown condos usually get 3 movers at $175. Two movers at $145 is only for very small jobs. There is a 3-hour minimum, then 15-minute billing, seven days a week at the same rate, and no charge for the drive to Los Altos. See moving cost for examples of what changes the hours.
Los Altos moving cost by home size
Because the hourly rate alone says little about the total, we checked how long our recent local moves really took, home size by home size, then applied the standard crew rate for each size. The rows describe what is common, not what is guaranteed; the hourly rate times your actual time is what you pay.
| Home size | Crew | Typical hours | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | 3 movers, $175/hr | 3 to 4 hours | $525 to $700 |
| 1 bedroom | 3 movers, $175/hr | 3 to 5 hours | $525 to $875 |
| 2 bedrooms | 3 movers, $175/hr | 4.5 to 7.75 hours | $788 to $1,356 |
| 3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft | 3 movers, $175/hr | 7 to 12.5 hours | $1,225 to $2,188 |
| 3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms | 4 movers, $235/hr | 7 to 12.5 hours | $1,645 to $2,938 |
Hours are the middle half of billed hours on our recent local moves for direct customers, July to October 2026, including the drive between homes; account and partner-billed jobs and jobs with our full packing service are left out. Packing materials are extra, and every job has a 3-hour minimum ($525 with 3 movers).
New two-story rebuilds bring finished floors and open-rail staircases that we pad before carrying, which takes a little longer than a single-story ranch home with a short carry.
Orchard town turned residential city
Los Altos sits between Mountain View and the Los Altos Hills, about 12 miles west of downtown San Jose. Downtown is a compact triangle of Main Street and State Street, bounded by San Antonio Road, Edith Avenue and Foothill Expressway, with Rancho shopping center and Loyola Corners serving the neighborhoods farther south. El Camino Real runs along the north edge and I-280 along the south. Commercial zoning is limited, so most of the city is quiet residential streets under big trees.
The remodel move
Most of Los Altos was built between 1950 and 1980, and many of those original ranch houses have since been remodeled or replaced. That leads to a common Los Altos move: out of the house and into a rental while the work happens, then back again months later. In effect it is two moves with a storage stay in between.
For that pattern, separate what you need in the rental from what can wait. The waiting part gets wrapped and goes into storage at a flat monthly price that does not change and is never discounted. When the house is ready, it comes back in one trip. If you are building, give the contractor's finish date some slack before you book the return.
Houses and what they mean on the day
- Original single-story ranch homes on wide lots: everything is on one floor, but the walk from bedroom to truck is long and the garage tends to be full.
- New two-story rebuilds: larger rooms, finished floors that must not be scratched, and staircases with open railings we pad before carrying.
- Downtown condos and apartments: elevators, shared halls and a manager who may want a certificate of insurance. We issue it free with the building's name, mailing address and email.
Streets without sidewalks
Many Los Altos residential streets have no sidewalks and no curbs in the usual sense, just pavement running to a landscaped edge. A truck parked on the shoulder can sink into soft ground or crush irrigation, so we look for a firm spot or use the driveway. On a narrow street, we park so cars can still pass. If the street itself needs to be held, we check the city's current rules for your block and arrange what they require.
Downtown, curb space is limited and busy during the day. An early start helps there.

Questions and answers
- Can you store our furniture while we rebuild?
Yes. Storage is billed as a flat monthly price that never changes and is not discounted. We move the items in and bring them back when the house is ready.
- Do you charge more for the second move back in?
It is the same hourly rate as the first move. The return can go faster when the items were wrapped and labeled on the way into storage.
- Our street has no sidewalk. Where will the truck park?
On the driveway or a firm stretch of pavement. We avoid soft shoulders that can rut or damage sprinklers.
- Our realtor referred us. Is there a discount?
Yes, 7% for a real-estate-agent referral. Just give us the agent's name or phone number.
- Do you mount the TV in the new house?
We dismount and can reconnect it, but we do not mount TVs on walls.
