San Bruno Movers, From the Ridge Streets Down to El Camino

San Bruno rises in one long tilt from the airport to Skyline Boulevard. At the bottom, San Mateo Avenue is the old main street, with small lots, older houses and apartments squeezed between the Caltrain line and El Camino Real. In the middle, The Shops at Tanforan and the BART station anchor a cluster of newer apartment buildings. Above that, neighborhoods like Crestmoor, Rollingwood and Portola Highlands climb toward Skyline College and the open hills of Sweeney Ridge. Golden Gate National Cemetery takes up a large piece of the northeast side, along Interstate 380.

It is a compact place, about 35 miles northwest of downtown San Jose, and a move to a neighboring city is usually a short drive. The work is in the details of each street.

1. The driveway angle. West of El Camino many driveways drop or rise sharply. If you would not park a moving van on it, neither will we; we use the street.
2. Interior steps. Hillside homes often have the garage below and the bedrooms one or two flights up. Count them.
3. Building rules. Apartments near Tanforan and BART tend to have move hours, a reserved elevator and a COI requirement. We issue the COI free once you send the management company's name, mailing address and email.
4. Your largest piece. Measure the sectional, the piano or the armoire against the narrowest door. Older houses near San Mateo Avenue have tight hallways.

The mid-century homes on the west side are generally single-story or split-level, built close to the curb with a one-car or two-car garage underneath. Floors are often original hardwood, so floor runners go down before anything moves. On the flat east side the homes are older and smaller, and the furniture inside them is often heavier than the house suggests: solid dressers, china cabinets, the kind of pieces handed down a generation. We wrap them in blankets inside the house and take them apart only when they will not clear a doorway.

Apartment moves near El Camino Real are mostly about timing. A reserved elevator slot that starts at nine means the truck should be at the curb by then, not still on Interstate 380.

• Sneath Lane and San Bruno Avenue are the main climbs west. Side streets off them curve and narrow, and we look for a level stretch to park.
• Downtown, off-street parking is scarce. We look for a legal space on the nearest side street.
• Near the BART station, weekday street parking fills early. An early start helps.
• If a curb space needs reserving, the City of San Bruno sets the rules for public streets. We go over it with you before the date.

Our trucks come up from San Jose on US 101 or Interstate 280, and the trip to your door costs you nothing. The first arrival window on the Peninsula is 8 to 10 AM. Commute traffic around the 380 interchange can be slow, which is one reason we like to know your exact building access ahead of time. Between your two addresses, drive time is billed, and doubled if the stops are more than 10 minutes apart under state rules. A move from Crestmoor to South San Francisco or Millbrae rarely gets there.

• South San Francisco, under 2 miles north, shares the 380 corridor but has the Westborough hills and Grand Avenue.
• Millbrae is just south, with condos around its BART and Caltrain station.
• Pacifica is over Skyline on Sharp Park Road, a coastal move with different weather.
• Burlingame is a few exits down 101, with Burlingame Avenue apartments and older bungalows.
• Daly City is fog country, with Westlake and Serramonte tract homes.
