The one flat corner of the north shore
The Marina is the rare San Francisco neighborhood where a dolly rolls without fighting the street. It sits on land filled for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, between Fort Mason on the east and Crissy Field and the Presidio on the west, with the Palace of Fine Arts at its western edge. Marina Boulevard and the Green front the bay, Chestnut Street is the shopping strip, and Lombard Street, carrying US 101 toward the Golden Gate Bridge, forms the southern border with Cow Hollow.
Flat does not mean easy, though. Almost every lot has a garage door at the sidewalk, so open curb is scarce, and weekends bring crowds to Chestnut and the waterfront.

Numbers behind our San Francisco work
We do not split our records out for the Marina, so this is the city as a whole. From mid-July through late October 2026, San Francisco sent us 43 quote requests, not counting account work, and 28 of them booked or completed. Where a home size was given, one-bedrooms came first (13), then two-bedrooms (12) and studios (6).
Stucco, garages and the stair inside
Much of the Marina went up in the 1920s and 1930s, and the look repeats block after block: two- to four-story stucco buildings with Mediterranean details, a row of garage doors at street level and flats stacked above. A few things follow from that:
- The carry is vertical, not horizontal. The interior stair, often with a turn at each landing, is where the hours go.
- Shared garages are the natural loading dock, but only if neighbors know the date and the cars are out.
- Larger corner buildings sometimes have a small lobby and an elevator, and with it a building manager who wants a certificate of insurance.
Finding curb between the garage doors
Between driveways there is often room for one car, not a truck. A temporary no-parking reservation from the SFMTA holds a stretch of curb for the day; our parking permit guide for San Francisco explains the steps. Lombard Street carries highway traffic, and Marina Boulevard and Chestnut get busy on sunny weekends, so a quieter side street is usually the better place to load. Blocking a neighbor's garage is the fastest way to start a bad day, which is why we settle the spot in advance.
What a Marina move runs per hour
A typical one- or two-bedroom flat here gets a three-person crew at $175 per hour. Two movers at $145 is for a very small load or when you ask for it, and four movers at $235 is for a three-bedroom over 1,800 square feet or anything with four bedrooms or more. Saturday costs the same as Tuesday. You pay for at least 3 hours, then in 15-minute increments, and full-service moves include floor protection, blankets, tape, loaner wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly. Payment is cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard (cards carry a 3% fee); we do not take checks.
Hours and cost by home size in the Marina
The hourly rate alone says little about the total, so we took the billed time on moves we completed from mid-July to mid-October 2026 and multiplied it by the matching crew rate. Read the numbers as a typical spread. We bill only the hours the move takes, with a 3-hour minimum.
| Home size | Crew | Typical hours | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | 3 movers, $175/hr | 3.5 to 4 hours | $613 to $700 |
| 1 bedroom | 3 movers, $175/hr | 3 to 4.5 hours | $525 to $788 |
| 2 bedrooms | 3 movers, $175/hr | 4.5 to 7.75 hours | $788 to $1,356 |
| 3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft | 3 movers, $175/hr | 7 to 12.5 hours | $1,225 to $2,188 |
| 3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms | 4 movers, $235/hr | 7 to 12.5 hours | $1,645 to $2,938 |
Middle 50% of billed hours on recent local moves for direct customers (July to October 2026), with the drive between homes counted as billed. Account and partner-billed jobs and moves that included our full packing are not in these numbers. Packing supplies extra; 3-hour minimum.
In a Marina flat, the interior stair is where the hours go, so an upper unit with a lot of furniture will sit toward the top of its row.
Marina moving day checklist
- Pick the loading point with us: shared garage, your own garage or the front door.
- Tell the other units in the building which day the garage will be busy.
- Apply for curb space a week or more ahead.
- Ask your manager or HOA whether they need a COI, then send us their name, mailing address and email.
- Have the TV off the wall bracket or let the crew dismount it; we reconnect at the new place but do not wall-mount.
- San Francisco mornings have a 9 to 11 AM arrival window, with a heads-up call about 30 minutes out.
From San Jose to the bay shore
The Marina is about 44 miles northwest of downtown San Jose, and there is no charge for traveling to you. The only distance rule that shows up on the bill is California's double drive time, which applies when the two addresses are more than 10 minutes apart. A move within 94123 does not trigger it.
Neighborhoods a few blocks south
- Cow Hollow: starts across Lombard and climbs toward Union Street and Broadway.
- Pacific Heights: steeper, with larger homes and doorman buildings on the ridge.
- Russian Hill: east past Fort Mason, with stairway lanes and cable cars.
- Presidio Heights: detached houses along the Presidio's southern edge.
- San Francisco: the citywide overview.

Questions and answers
Is a Marina move faster because the streets are flat?
The walk to the truck is easier, but the stairs inside the building take the same effort as anywhere else. The bigger time saver is a reserved curb spot right outside.
Can the crew use our shared garage?
Usually. Let the other residents know the date, get the cars out and keep a clear lane from the garage to your stair.
Will you park on Lombard Street?
Usually not. It carries highway traffic, so a side street or a reserved curb is the safer plan.
Do weekend moves cost more?
No. Our hourly rates are the same every day of the week.
My building wants a certificate of insurance. Is there a fee?
No. Send us the HOA or management company's name, mailing address and email and we issue it at no charge.
Can you store things if the new place is not ready?
Yes. Storage is a flat monthly price and is never discounted. See our packing and storage page for how it works.
