How do I pay for a long-distance move?

Short answer

A long-distance move is paid in two halves: 50% on the day we pick up your shipment and the other 50% when it is delivered. We take cash, money orders, Visa and Mastercard, and cards carry a 3% fee.

Paying by card for the second half

If you plan to cover the delivery payment by card, it is due one day before delivery rather than at the door. That way the crew can unload as soon as they arrive without anyone waiting on a terminal. Cash or a money order can be handed over at delivery as usual.

If someone else is receiving the shipment for you, such as a family member or property manager, arrange the second payment ahead of time so the delivery is not held up. A quick note to David with the name of the person meeting the truck keeps things simple.

How the two halves are figured

Whatever your written estimate comes to, half is paid at pickup and half at delivery. If you pay a half by card, 3% is added to that half. If the final weight is higher or lower than estimated, the second payment is adjusted to the actual total, at the rate written on your estimate. Reserved-truck moves have a flat price, so the two halves stay exactly as quoted.

Tips for the crew are separate and up to you. More on how pricing is built is on our long-distance page and in the moving cost guide.

More questions people ask

Do I pay anything before pickup day?
