Japantown San Jose Movers on a Tight, Historic Grid

San Jose's Japantown is one of just three historic Japantowns still standing in the country, the others being in San Francisco and Los Angeles. It lies a mile or so north of Downtown in ZIP 95112, centered on Jackson Street between North Fourth and Sixth Streets, with Taylor and Empire Streets close by. Family-run shops and restaurants line Jackson, the Japanese American Museum of San Jose is on North Fifth, and the Sunday farmers market brings in shoppers from across the city. The Hensley Historic District and its Victorians are a short walk away.

Many are now two or three flats. Expect tall front steps, narrow halls and a stair that turns tighter than modern furniture likes. Upper flats may share an entry with the unit below.

Japantown streets are narrow by suburban standards and lined with parked cars on both sides. Read the posted signs on your block early, because the rules change from block to block. To hold curb space for the truck, San Jose's Department of Transportation issues a Tow-Away Permit, and the city suggests applying about two weeks ahead.

Two local wrinkles: the Sunday market crowds the blocks around Jackson Street, so another day or a later start is often easier nearby. And the Japantown/Ayer light rail station is on North First Street, so a building that fronts First needs a truck spot off the tracks and the traffic lanes.

A studio or one-bedroom flat with a very light load can be done by 2 movers at $145 an hour. Most apartments and condos get 3 movers at $175 an hour, which keeps a steady line moving on long stairs. A large home of four or more bedrooms, or three bedrooms over 1,800 square feet, gets 4 movers at $235 an hour. Minimum 3 hours, then 15-minute steps. Japantown is about 1 mile north of downtown San Jose, so the crew is close and the trip to you is free. Moves between Japantown and Downtown, Naglee Park or the Rose Garden are short drives. A move out to South San Jose or Evergreen in heavy traffic can pass 10 minutes, and then California rules double the drive time between the two homes.

• Check your block's parking signs and decide whether you need the city permit.
• Avoid Sunday morning near Jackson Street if you can.
• Measure the narrowest stair turn against your largest sofa, dresser or box spring.
• In a shared Victorian, let the other tenants know the date and that the entry will be busy.

• The arrival window is 8 to 10 AM, and the crew calls about 30 minutes ahead.
