Across the bay or down the East Bay freeways

Between mid-July and late October 2026 we received 9 quote requests between an East Bay city and the South Bay or Peninsula, not counting account work. That made it our second most common cross-region pair, after San Francisco to the South Bay, and three of those moves were booked or completed. Typical pairs: Fremont to Milpitas or San Jose, Hayward to San Mateo, San Mateo to Hayward, and Oakland to San Jose.

All of these are local hourly moves. What changes the bill is which freeway or bridge sits between your two homes.

Bridges and double drive time

If your move crosses the bay on the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge, or runs the length of I-880 or I-680, the drive between your homes will be more than 10 minutes, so it is billed twice under California's double drive time rule. A Fremont to Milpitas move can be short enough that only a small amount of drive time is added; an Oakland to San Jose move adds much more. Driving to your pickup and back from your drop-off is never billed.

To estimate it yourself, time the drive door to door on a normal weekday morning and double it. That is roughly how much crew time the drive adds to your bill.

Arrival windows depend on where you start

Starting in the East Bay, the arrival window is 9 to 11 AM. Starting in the South Bay or on the Peninsula, it is 8 to 10 AM. Either way the crew calls 30 minutes before arriving. If you need a later start, ask; an afternoon arrival is possible on some days but the window is wider (12 to 4 PM) because it depends on when the morning job finishes.

Tri-Valley houses and South Bay apartments

Some moves on this corridor go from a single-family house in Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon or Fremont to an apartment or townhome in San Jose, Santa Clara or Sunnyvale, or the reverse. Two things help on those days. First, ask whether the apartment community needs a certificate of insurance; ours is free. Second, book the elevator or loading area if the building has one. Elevator wait time is billed as part of the move.

For a 3-bedroom over 1,800 sq ft or any 4-bedroom house, we send 4 movers. For most smaller homes, 3.

Questions and answers

Is a move from Oakland to San Jose local or long distance?

Local. It is billed by the hour for the crew and truck, with a 3-hour minimum, and the drive between the two addresses is counted twice under double drive time.

Do you charge mileage or fuel?

There is no mileage or fuel charge on a local move. The time spent driving between your two addresses is what is billed, counted twice.

We are moving from Fremont to Milpitas. Does double drive time still apply?

Only if the drive between the two addresses is more than 10 minutes. For short moves within or between neighboring cities there is often little or no double drive time.

Can you move us on a Sunday?

Yes. We work 7 days a week and the hourly rate is the same every day.
