Do you charge for waiting on the elevator?

There is no elevator fee, but time spent waiting for an elevator is part of the hourly job time. A reserved, keyed service elevator keeps that wait short.

No fee, but the clock runs

We never add an elevator surcharge. On an hourly local move, though, the clock keeps running while the crew stands at the elevator, so waiting is billed as part of the completion time like any other minute of the job.

What a wait costs

Because the rate covers the whole team and truck, a delay costs the same per minute as loading does. Here is what 15 idle minutes looks like at each crew size, after the 3-hour minimum is met:

CrewHourly rate15 minutes
2 movers$145$36.25
3 movers$175$43.75
4 movers$235$58.75

Rates are the same any day of the week. See the moving cost guide for the full breakdown.

How to keep the wait short

  • Reserve the service or freight elevator for your move window.
  • Ask building staff to key it to independent service so it stays on your floor.
  • Let neighbors or the front desk know a move is under way.
  • Stage boxes near the elevator door on your floor if the hallway allows.
  • Book the elevator at both buildings when you are moving between two.

Why we bill it this way

An hourly move only works if it reflects the real time the crew spends on your job, whatever the reason. The upside is that you never pay a flat elevator charge on a building where the lift is fast and reserved. Stairs and long hallways are treated the same way: no extra fee, just the time they take.

Questions and answers

Is there a separate charge for using an elevator?

No. Only the time spent, including any waiting, counts toward the hourly total.

What if the building elevator breaks during my move?

The crew keeps working however they safely can, and time continues at the normal rate.

Does a long-distance move bill elevator time the same way?

Interstate moves priced by weight can include an elevator accessorial instead. Within California, delivery has no such charge.
